Learn to Write Well, and Take It Anywhere
Clear, purposeful writing is a skill that travels into every field and every future.
The Writing minor at Goshen College builds and sharpens your voice no matter the genre. You’ll learn how to write and revise strong fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction and memoir. You’ll also have the option to extend your talents to screenwriting, playwriting, digital and professional writing, and even graphic narratives.
You’ll work closely with faculty who are published authors, editors, and experienced communicators. The minor is an excellent complement to any major, whether, filmmaking, journalism, marketing, communication, history, the sciences or public health. Maybe you dream of publishing a book, or heading to graduate school, or maybe you prefer to sharpen your workplace communication. No matter your goals, you’ll graduate writing with purpose, clarity, and creativity in the strongest version of your own, distinctive voice.
What You’ll Write
The minor lets you focus your interests through elective coursework. For example, you can study fiction, nonfiction, poetry, media, and professional writing. Along the way, there’s also room to explore memoir, scriptwriting, digital media, comics, and others genres and formats. You’ll build a writing portfolio that showcases your expertise and prepares you for your next steps. All writing students complete a manuscript by the time they graduate, and many even publish a book.

Put Your Writing to Work
Your writing is not confined to the classroom. Many writing students contribute to campus publications like Pinchpenny Press, Broadside, Squirrel Digest, and The Record, Goshen’s distinguished student-run newspaper. Others work as writing tutors in the Academic Success Center. Some also intern with local and national organizations, publishers, and nonprofits. In addition, you’ll have chances to present your work at public readings and campus events.
You’ll write and collaborate in spaces like the Good Library and the English department’s editorial and seminar rooms. You’ll develop relationships with faculty who help you with ideas, and provide advice, and direction.

Writing is one of the most versatile minors, allowing you to step into and stand out in any profession. It prepares you for roles like author or editor, journalist, content creator, public relations or marketing professional, nonprofit director, grant writer, educator, and lawyer. Goshen writing alumni have published books, pursued graduate degrees, and built careers in publishing, media, education, law, and multitude of other fields.
As a writing student, if you choose to contribute to publications boards, you may qualify for the Sara Ann Freed scholarship, and you may also apply for the Horswell Publishing fellowship through the English department.
