Become a Nurse Where You’re Already at Home

Indiana’s oldest BSN, built to help you afford it, finish it, and belong.

Nursing at Goshen College is the oldest BSN program in Indiana. It’s also accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, and approved by the Indiana State Board of Nursing. You’ll learn to care for the whole person. Then you’ll graduate ready to pass the NCLEX-RN and work as a registered nurse.

Students like you aren’t the exception in Goshen nursing — they’re the program. Most are first-generation, and most are Pell-eligible. A large share are Hispanic. And most commute from Elkhart County. So here’s the norm, not a compromise: living at home and being the first in your family to do this.

Here’s one thing to know early. First, you apply to Goshen. Then, during your first year, you apply to the professional nursing program. After that, your first nursing course begins in the fall of sophomore year.

    Is Goshen Nursing Right for You?

    If you already know you want to be a nurse, the door here is built to be open. Admission is holistic and test-optional. It weighs your GPA, with a 2.7 minimum, plus your references. It also weighs your life experiences through an essay. So real work counts, like being a CNA or caregiver. Goshen is also a Hispanic-Serving Institution. So being first-gen, Hispanic, or commuting from home is not something to overcome here. Instead, it’s the community you’re joining.

    Nursing is demanding. And the real challenge is juggling family, work, and a rigorous program — all without running out of road. But you won’t do it alone. Advising, mentorship, tutoring, and financial-aid counseling are there too. So they help you finish, not just enroll. Classes are small, faculty know you by name. The program aligned with Goshen College values builds cultural awareness, sensitivity, and service mindset. And those skills set Goshen nurses apart in caring for every patient.

    What You’ll Study

    The nursing major pairs a liberal arts foundation with the discipline of nursing, built on nursing and related theories, scientific principles, intercultural perspectives, and prepares you as a generalist for professional practice. Required courses include Health Care Ethics, Nursing Care of the Child, Human Nutrition and Developmental Psychology.

    Where You’ll Learn, and Practice

    You’ll train in the newly renovated Center for Nursing and Public Health in the Westlawn building: a 10-bed skills lab, a hospital simulation lab with obstetrics, pediatrics, acute/trauma settings, a six-room exam suite, classrooms, and student lounges and huddle rooms.

    Hands-on learning is central. You’ll complete clinical placements in nearby high-caliber hospitals and community settings, practice in simulation and skills labs, and join service-learning like the Goshen Health flu-shot clinic. Goshen’s partnerships with local health-care organizations put you in real care settings early.

    Cost comes first, so here it is plainly. Goshen offers scholarships specifically for nursing students based on academic performance and financial need, alongside awards open to all students, including an automatic academic scholarship, a first-generation leadership award, and the Indiana Latino Institute scholarship.
